It’s true what they say, Virginia is for lovers–anything you love to do, you can probably find it in Virginia. Here are 7 of the best day trip ideas to get you out and exploring.

Trip Time: 1 Day Including Travel

Best Time to Visit: Year Round

1. Virginia Beach

Breathe in the salty air and listen to the sound of crashing waves while walking down the boardwalk in Virginia Beach! Whether you’re looking to relax at the beach, catch a wave, listen to live music, or dine at incredible restaurants, Virginia Beach is a great family and couple-friendly destination.

2. Shenandoah National Park

Virginia is home to the beautiful Shenandoah National Park. While there are many entrances to the park, I recommend the south entrance near Waynesboro/Staunton, Virginia. Curve through mountain roads on the Skyline drive, take in the glorious mountain scenery at overlooks and hikes, and jump in some waterfalls!

3. Blue Ridge Parkway

Directly across the road from the south Shenandoah National Park entrance, you’ll find the free and easy to access Blue Ridge Parkway. Nearly identical in landscape, the Blue Ridge Parkway is a great option for those looking to save some money and explore more hikes.

4. Colonial Williamsburg

Turn back time and experience the charming historic city of Colonial Williamsburg. Adult day passes start at $46.99, and almost all of the exhibits are included. While the majority can be done in a day, history enthusiasts will want to stay a couple days to take it all in.

5. Eastern Shore/Cape Charles

Located across the iconic Chesapeake Bay/Bridge Tunnel ($18 each way or $2 on the way back with an E-ZPass), the quaint town of Cape Charles features an adorable main street area with shops, delicious ice cream, and restaurants. Venture a few feet further and you’ll find the sand and salty water of the Chesapeake Bay under your feet. Spend the afternoon floating in the warm water, lay out at the beach, or walk around the town.

6. Washington D.C.

While several days are required to truly do the city justice, Washington D.C. is a wonderful place to spend the day! Almost all of the museums are free, so it’s a very budget friendly city activities-wise, unless you’re planning to pay for parking. We recommend parking at the Franconia-Springfield station and taking the metro into the city to save on parking and hassle.

7. Yorktown Riverwalk

This secret gem of an area is perfect for a warm afternoon! Stroll along the Yorktown river on its own version of the boardwalk, lay out at the beach, board a sunset cruise on the Schooner Alliance, and get dinner and drinks at one of the local pubs.

Whatever type of adventure you love, find it in Virginia! With everything just a few hours away, there are plenty of ways to make the most of your day off. What's your favorite place to visit in Virginia? Let us know by tagging us at @wanderingwenzels on Instagram!
